A mock test answers the one question practice questions cannot: can you hold your concentration and your timing for the whole exam? StudySes offers full-length IELTS mock tests, sample questions and practice tests by section, study plans that pace the weeks before your test, and progress analytics that show where your marks are leaking. It does not give you a band score, and this page is honest about what a mock can and cannot tell you.

How it works

You pick a full-length mock test or a single section, work through it at the real test’s length, and then see how you did. Progress analytics collect the results across attempts, so after two or three mocks you can see whether your Reading time is improving or whether the same Listening question type keeps catching you. Study plans turn that into a schedule: what to practise this week, given your test date and the sections that need the work.

The format follows the official one. IELTS’s Academic test-format page sets out Listening at about 30 minutes with 4 parts and 40 questions, Reading at 60 minutes with 3 sections and 40 questions, Writing at 60 minutes with two tasks (a minimum of 150 words for Task 1 and 250 for Task 2), and Speaking at 11 to 14 minutes in 3 parts. The British Council’s test-format page puts the whole test at 2 hours 45 minutes, with Listening, Reading and Writing taken on the same day without breaks and Speaking on the same day or within seven days.

For the Speaking section specifically, the IELTS Speaking practice feature covers Parts 1 to 3 with sample questions and feedback on your answers; the mock tests are where you put that section back into the context of a full exam day.

What it is for

Mock tests are for the final month, when the question is no longer “do I know this?” but “can I do it in the room?” Three things only a full-length mock reveals:

  • Stamina. Most candidates have never sat about 2 hours 30 minutes of back-to-back English with no break. The third hour is where careless Reading errors appear.
  • Timing by section. Reading gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions across three passages; candidates who spend 25 minutes on the first passage learn it from a mock, not from a worksheet.
  • Order effects. Writing comes after Listening and Reading, so your Task 2 essay is written tired. Practising it fresh at 9 a.m. tells you little.

Sample questions by section do the other job: once a mock shows that matching-headings questions or Part 3 of Listening cost you, you drill those until the next mock. The English hub collects the general-fluency work that sits underneath all of it, and the vocabulary flashcards are the fastest way to turn the words you missed in a Reading passage into words you know.

What it does not do

StudySes does not estimate a band score, and no app can do it honestly for Writing and Speaking, which trained examiners mark against descriptors. A mock in StudySes shows how you did and where you lost time, which is what you can act on; it does not tell you what an examiner would write on the day. It also cannot provide a live human examiner for the Speaking section, and it is not affiliated with the organisations that run the test.

Nor can a mock test fix a problem on its own. Taking a fourth mock because the third went badly rarely helps; taking the section drills the third one pointed to does. If the Speaking section is the one that worries you and the test is close, the IELTS Speaking test next week scenario is a seven-day plan for exactly that.

Getting the most from it

Take your first full-length mock four to five weeks out, in one sitting, at the time of day your real test is booked for. Read the results for patterns rather than the total: which section ran out of time, which question type you got wrong twice. Spend the next fortnight on section drills for those, then take a second mock. If the pattern has moved, keep going; if it has not, change the method rather than the volume. A final mock in the last week is for confidence and timing, not for learning anything new.

Frequently asked questions

Are IELTS mock tests harder than the real test?

Not by design, but they often feel harder, because you take them without the adrenaline of the real day and with distractions around you. A mock test's value is the timing and the stamina, not the difficulty. If a full-length StudySes mock feels long, that is the point: the real Listening, Reading and Writing sections run back to back for about 2 hours 30 minutes with no break.

How many mock tests should I take before IELTS?

Two to four full-length mock tests across the final month is enough for most candidates, spaced at least a week apart with targeted practice in between. More than that eats study time without adding information. Use the first mock to find your weakest section, section drills to fix it, and the last mock in the final week to confirm the timing holds.

How long is the IELTS test in total?

The IELTS test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes, according to the British Council's test-format page: Listening about 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes, Writing 60 minutes, taken together with no breaks, plus a Speaking test of 11 to 14 minutes that may be on the same day or within seven days. A full-length mock should feel the same.

Can an app predict my IELTS band score?

Not reliably, and StudySes does not try. Band scores come from trained examiners applying the official descriptors to a full performance; a number from software is a guess dressed as a result. StudySes shows how you did on a mock, where you lost time and which question types went wrong, which is what you can act on. Only the real test gives a band.

Is the IELTS mock test free on StudySes?

StudySes is free to download on iPhone and Android, with optional in-app purchases for more content. The store listing for your platform shows what is included and what is purchased separately; this site does not quote prices because they vary by country and change.
